Siem Reap

Siem Reap is located about 311 km north of Phnom Penh and only 152 kilometers from the border of Thailand. It is the provincial capital of Siem Reap province, Cambodia. In recent years, tourism in Siem Reap has developed rapidly because it is the gateway to Angkor Wat, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Siem Reap is a unique and important stopover for visiting Angkor Wat. Most tourists come here to visit Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat

It can be called the peak of classical Khmer architectural art. Angkor Wat is a complete city comprising palaces, temples, gardens and castles. It was the capital of the ancient Khmer kingdom. In 802 AD, King Jaya Vamana II unified the Khmer kingdom and built the capital at the northern bank of Tonle Sap Lake, named Angkor. Kings of Khmer built many palaces and temples, making Angkor the religious and spiritual center of all Khmer people. Angkor Wat, together with the Great Wall of China, Borobudur of Indonesia and the Taj Mahal of India, are known as the four wonders of the Ancient Orient.

Tonle Sap Lake

It is 30 minutes' drive from the downtown area and is the largest fresh lake in Southeast Asia. Tonle Sap Lake is rich in aquatic resources. Many fishermen live on the lake all year round, becoming a unique feature of the Tonle Sap Lake. Many visitors also like to experience life on the water.

There are not many shopping places in Siem Reap. Most shopping places are business establishments in the old market and on the main road of Siem Reap. In the old market, there are many textiles. If you want to buy scarves, silverware, souvenirs, fabrics, statuettes, chopsticks and other items, you can go to the old market. In general, the goods in the old market are of low quality and often not packaged. In contrast, the goods in the business establishments on the main road of Siem Reap are of high quality, well packaged and more expensive.

Since there are visitors from all over the world in Siem Reap, Chinese dishes, Japanese cooking, Indian curries, Italian pizza, Vietnamese, Thai and other cuisines can be found in Siem Reap in addition to Cambodian cuisine, meeting the requirements of different populations. Most restaurants are gathered together. The features of catering in Siem Reap are large amounts of food, relatively low prices and cost-effectiveness.

Cambodian-style spring rolls

Similar to China's pancake rolls, fresh vegetables are rolled in thin pancakes. Before you eat them, dip them in some sauce. The fillings and sauces vary with restaurants.

Cambodian-style hot pot

Traditional hot pots are in ceramic pots. Spices and herbs are added to the soup. The longer the soup is cooked, the more tasty it is. Similar to the small hot pot in China, a small pot of soup, a plate of beef, a plate of fresh vegetable and a plate of transparent small round cakes are supplemented by a dish of sauce. Sliced meat should added to the pot, then take two small round cakes and sprinkle some water on the edges of the cakes, and put the cakes on an empty plate. Then, when the meat is well cooked, put some meat on the cakes and add some fresh vegetable. When the cakes become soft, you can roll them up and eat them after dipping them into the sauce.

Cambodian-style sour soup

Ingredients of the sour soup include beef, pork, chicken, fish and all kinds of vegetables such as water spinach, sauerkraut, lemon leaves, lotus stems and white gourd. Cambodians like eating hot and sour food; therefore, lemon juice, fish sauce, vinegar and chili sauce are indispensable. The sour soup is tasty and suitable for the hot weather in Southeast Asia. In Siem Reap, the bus fares of all bus companies are low and uniform. Most bus companies have their departure stations near their offices.


There is no a public transit system in Siem Reap. An on-call tuktuk taxi is the best local transportation tool that can take you anywhere. The fare ranges from 1 to 5 US dollars. You just need to tell the tuktuk taxi driver your destination.

Siem Reap has a tropical monsoon climate. From November to the following April is the dry season and from May to October is the rainy season. Siem Reap has an annual average temperature of 24℃, with an annual average precipitation of about 1,494 mm. The best tourist season is December to February when the weather is moderate and less rainy. Helpful tips: In Siem Reap, the sunshine is very intense. During the Spring Festival, the temperature at noon is above 36℃. Make sure you take precautions against the sun.
