Gulangyu Island

Xiamen University

Xiamen University, within easy reach of both mountains and sea, and located close to the South Putuo Temple, the beautiful beach, and the Hulishan Fortress, is known as “one of the most beautiful campuses in China.”The beautiful scenery and coexistence of students and monks make Xiamen University campus and the nearby areas a truly unique location.

Hulishan Fortress

Hulishan Fortress in Xiamen is located on the southern side of Xiamen Island, adjacent to Xiamen University campus and surrounded by the sea on three sides. It is blessed with unique natural tourism resources. This scenic spot is a state-protected historic site and a national class 4A scenic destination. It was built during two decades of the Qing dynasty and was known as the “Fujian portal and the key to the South.”The Hulishan Fortress is not only one of Xiamen’s key tourist sites, but is an important national education base for Xiamen city.

As well as boasting charming and beautiful scenery, Xiamen produces an abundance of products, such as Xiamen pies, Huang Sheng pork floss, and dried meats.Xiamen is not short of brand-name stores, filled with all kinds of home appliances, high fashion, gold, silver and jade, jewelry, craft treasures, antiques and paintings, and other merchandise.Some of the specialty stores, street stalls, night markets, and discounters are also worth a visit.

Zhongshan Road

Zhongshan Road enjoys the reputation of being one of the “Top Ten Streets in China,” and is a traditional busy commercial area of Xiamen.Hundreds of stores line the street, and the large variety of products is spectacular.The buildings along Zhongshan Road are in a range of different shapes, cleverly combining European architectural styles with the features of a coastal city, and displaying a distinctive taste.In addition, this century-old street is the only business street in Xiamen leading directly to the sea, so after shopping you can also enjoy the scenery of Gulangyu Island.

Longtou Road on Gulangyu Island

Longtou Road is the main commercial street on Gulangyu Island and is the only way for tourists to reach the island.There is a wealth of craft stores and calligraphy & painting stores on both sides of the street, which sell local crafts such as beads, lacquer engravings, silk figures, painted sculptures, ceramics, etc., as well as antiques, jade, calligraphy, and porcelain from around the country.There are also lots of stores selling dry goods, which are perfect for tourists to purchase as gifts for friends and family.

Xiamen cuisine is centered around four items of seafood –crabs, shrimp, fish, and shellfish – with Southern Fujian flavors in particular, as well as Taiwanese and Chaozhou-Shantou flavors. With traditional Fujian cuisine as a basis, and with influences from other cuisine, the local cooking tends to avoid harsh and greasy tastes so as to create dishes which are fresh and mellow through steaming, stir-frying, deep frying, braising, simmering, and stewing. There are a countless number of Xiamen snacks:peanut soup, fried oysters, noodles, satay noodles...... Just thinking about them is enough to make your mouth water!Tasting all the delicious food is a major task when visiting Xiamen!

Ginger Duck

This was originally an imperial dish served in palaces. According to a legend, it was created by a famous doctor of the Shang dynasty named Wu Zhong, and later it was prepared by the public and became a famous dish.It is made with red-faced Muscovy ducks. The duck should be fried in sesame oil until it smells fragrant, then ginger and rice wine is added and it is left to stew.This is a delicious dish with sweet and hot flavors. It has the added health benefits of invigorating the lungs, soothing the liver, relaxing tendons, improving circulation, dispelling colds, reducing phlegm, along with other effects.

Dajiaxiang Ginger Duck (Siming Nan Lu Chain) is a small chain of street cafes, whose delicious dishes can be smelled half a street away. Although it is a chain cafe, their flavors are better than average with a more traditional taste created through slow-cooking over a small fire. Also, the ingredients used and the cooking times all respect the ancient techniques, and ensure that the dishes served by all the cafes within the chain have the same taste.

Peanut Soup

Peanut soup holds health benefits for the lungs and helps to regulate body fluid levels. It is inexpensive and is suitable for both old and young.The raw peanuts are stewed in a pot with a small amount of soda powder and water. The soup is first boiled over a high heat until the peanuts are milky white, then the heat is lowered and the pot is covered until cooked.The mixture of cooked peanuts and sugar needs to be boiled so as to dissolve the sugar.

Satay Noodles

This is one of Xiamen’s most famous snacks.The soup is bright red in color and has a salty, fresh, and spicy taste.Among the main ingredients are the finest shrimp heads, which are mixed with salt and preserved for more than two months. The shrimps are finely ground into a paste which is added, along with garlic sauce, to hot oil and fried, the dish is completed by adding five spice powder, curry powder, chili powder, sesame seeds, and other ingredients once cooled.

Xiamen has a well-developed bus service with more than 200 bus lines currently operational throughout the city.Journeys are priced per segment.
