Special Baggage

Bicycles

Bicycles can be checked-in as baggage and can be transported free of charge within the passengers free baggage allowances on China Southern Airlines operated flights. The total weight/size and number of checked-in baggage shall not exceed the permitted free baggage allowances; otherwise fees for overweight/size and additional baggage apply. In case the bicycle needs to be checked in additional to the free baggage allowances, it is considered as additional baggage and will be charged. The baggage fees can be found here . Please note that flights operated by other airlines than China Southern Airlines may be subject to different baggage rules (for example for feeders and so-called codeshare-flights).

For flights with our partner airlines KLM and/or Air France, additionally for feeders from and to Germany and/or for the so-called Codeshare flights under China Southern flight number (CZ) with partner airlines, bicycles have to be registered in advance and are chargeable. Before the flights, bicycles need to be prepared for the air transportation. For this purpose, the air must be deflated from the tires and the handlebars must be rotated by 90 degrees and firmly secured. The wheels and pedals need to be removed and firmly secured to the bicycle body. Folding bicycles must be folded and secured. The transportation of electric bicycles, ebikes and pedelecs with China Southern Airlines is not permitted.


Surf Gear

  • 1. If surfboards (windsurfing) and equipment are to be transported as baggage, agreement should be obtained from the company's ground services security department or agent.
  • 2. Charges
    • a.Charges on domestic flights:
      • (a)Charges for surfboards (including windsurfing boards) with perimeters of no more than 227cm (109 inches) are calculated based on the fees for 5kg of excess baggage. Charges for surfboards with perimeters exceeding 227cm (109 inches) are calculated based on the fees for 8kg of excess baggage.
      • (b)The above charges apply to each passenger with only one surfboard (or windsurfing board). If one passenger carries more than one surfboard (or windsurfing board), overweight baggage charges will be applied in accordance with the general charges for excess baggage.
    • b.Charges on international flights:
      • (a)These items cannot be included in a traveler's free baggage allowance.
      • (b)Charges for surfboards with perimeters of no more than 300cm (118 inches) should be calculated in accordance with the excess baggage fees (i.e., the charges for general overweight baggage).
  • 3. When transporting surfboards (or windsurfing boards) and equipment, the carrier undertakes liability for transportation in accordance with the applicable regulations for general luggage.

Golf Equipment

Golf equipment includes a golf bag (including golf balls and golf clubs) and a pair of golf shoes. One set of golf clubs can include a maximum of 14 clubs, 12 balls, and one pair of shoes.

  • a.Charges on domestic flights:
    • (a)Charges are levied based on the fees for 6kg of excess baggage. Charges are only applied if the above items are not included in the free baggage allowance for the cabin class paid for by the traveler.
    • (b)If the golf equipment is included in the free baggage allowance, the overweight baggage charge shall be applied as per the above-mentioned special charges or the general charges for excess baggage (whichever is less.)
    • (c)If the golf equipment is not included in the free baggage allowance and the overweight baggage exceeds 15kg, the overweight baggage charge shall be applied as per the general charges for excess baggage. The regulations state that the first 15kg of overweight baggage is calculated according to the special charge per 6kg of overweight baggage, and every kilogram in excess of the first 15kg shall be charged for in accordance with the general charge for excess baggage.
    • (d)Each passenger may only carry one set of golf clubs at this discounted rate.
  • b.Charges on international flights:
    • (a)Each adult traveler may transport one set of golf equipment free of charge.The total weight of the equipment must not exceed 23kg. The linear dimensions of this equipment must not exceed 158cm (62 inches).
    • (b)Any weight exceeding the free baggage allowance will be charged for in the same way as general excess baggage.

Skiing Gear

Skiing equipment includes a pair of skis, two ski poles, and/or a pair of ski boots.

  • a.Charges on domestic flights:
    • (a)The special charges for each set of skiing equipment are equal to those for three kilograms of excess luggage.
    • (b)If the skiing equipment is not included in the free luggage allowance, the above regulations shall apply. If the skiing equipment is included in the free luggage allowance and is overweight, it will be charged according to the above special rates or the rates for general excess luggage (the lower rates shall apply).
    • (c) For each passenger, only one set of skiing equipment will be charged according to these regulations. Each kilogram of excess skiing equipment will be charged according to the rates for general excess luggage.
  • b.Charges on international flights:
    • (a)Each passenger can only transport one set of skiing equipment as checked luggage for free.
    • (b)The total weight of checked skiing equipment cannot exceed 23 kilograms, and the total linear dimensions can be no greater than 203 centimeters (80 inches).
    • (c)Any oversized skiing equipment will be charged in accordance with the rates for general excess luggage.

Fishing Gear

A set of fishing equipment consists of: A tackle box, a creel (beam creel), a pair of fishing shoes, two fishing rods, and a dipping net.

  • a.Charges on domestic flights:
    • (a)Charges are applied based on the fees for 4kg of excess baggage. Charges may only be applied if the above items are not included in the free baggage allowance for the cabin class paid for by the traveler.
    • (b)If the fishing equipment is included in the free baggage allowance, the overweight charge shall be applied in accordance with the above-mentioned special charges or the general charges for excess baggage (whichever is less.)
    • (c)The charges for fishing equipment over 15 kg shall be subject to the general charges for excess baggage.
  • b.Charges on international flights:
    • (a)Each of the above-mentioned items of fishing equipment can be included in the free baggage allowance as an item of baggage with a size of 158cm (62 inches.)
    • (b)Any excess weight should be charged in the same way as general excess baggage.

Musical Instruments

  • 1. The weight of such items is not included in the free luggage allowance. These items are charged separately as excess luggage.
  • 2. For small musical instruments such as guitars or violins (no greater than 100cm in length, 40cm in width and 75kg in weight) which passengers want to bring on as carry-on luggage, the standard regulations for cabin luggage apply. Cabin luggage which occupies a seat will be charged using either of the following two methods (the higher rate will apply):
    • a.Cabin luggage which occupies a seat can be charged as excess luggage according to its total actual weight.
    • b.Cabin luggage which occupies a seat can be charged according to the number of seats occupied, the flight mileage, and the passenger’s ticket class.

Precision Instruments and Electrical Appliances

  • 1. Precision instruments and electrical appliances (such as musical instruments, TV sets, acoustic equipment, washing machines, refrigerators, desktop computers, tape recorders, and VCD players) must be transported as cargo. Their transportation as luggage is subject to approval by China Southern Airlines, and they must be transported in their factory packaging or China Southern Airlines approved packaging.
  • 2. The above items shall not be included in the free luggage allowance. They will be charged separately as excess luggage.
  • 3. China Southern Airlines will only be held liable for such items in accordance with the regulations for checked luggage according to the Montreal Convention, the Warsaw Convention, as well as the relevant provisions and terms of China Southern Airlines’ transport rules.
